I would agree. A new study by Synovate found that despite 58% of internet users still not knowing what "social networking" means, more than a third of current users are losing interest (and as much as 45% in US have lost interest). http://www.mediapost.com/publications/?fa=Articles.san&s=89928&Nid=46897&p=352970 I, for one, am tired of having to create new profiles and find new friends with each new site that pops up. And I definitely don't spend as much time on those sites as I used to. Aside from lost friends and colleagues, aren't social media sites just a waste of time?

Its difficult to agree with such a broad statement. The overall traffic numbers may point to a leveling off point, but I think it is very demographic specific. We've been spending alot of time studying Forrester's social technographic information and the research supports it. For example, males 35-44 living in the U.S. are more likely to be "spectators" of social media rather than say "joiners" or "creators." So from a marketer's perspective, your view on the topic will depend on who your customers are or your own social technographic profile. Here's a useful tool for determining the correct social technographic profile: http://www.forrester.com/Groundswell/profile_tool.html
